Rob Oseland heard plenty of skepticism about some of the projects he helped create along the Las Vegas Strip. The Bellagio was too expensive. The Wynn and Encore were too far north, away from the heart of the Strip. Those resorts became some of the most successful and glamorous along the Strip, but that hasn't stopped Oseland from hearing similar doubts about his latest endeavor — transforming the old Sahara into SLS Las Vegas.

Eat this: Pop Up Pizza at the Plaza

Why? Because the refurbished downtown establishment opened on the heels of the Cosmopolitan and appeared to be [...] -

‘The Dictator’: Cohen’s childish, racist shtick
15 May 2012 | 12:41 pmSacha Baron Cohen in "The Dictator" In The Dictator, Sacha Baron Cohen plays a fish out of water, acclimating himself to American culture and offending everyone in sight while he does it. You could begin that sentence with, “In Borat,” or “In Bruno,” and not make any other changes. Therein lies the problem with The Dictator: [...] -
Body English: Best new live venue in town
14 May 2012 | 3:19 pmThe Drums (photo by Mike Prevatt) This is not a proper review of The Drums sold out concert last night at Body English. olvera street cinco de mayo 2012
6 May 2012 | 11:52 pmI wasn't planning to go to Olvera street but my co-worker told me, yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, so I decided to stop by. Also I didn't have enough cash because I wasn't planning to go here, so I couldn't buy anything.Yes, there were way too many people. I couldn't get to the store I wanted to go because of the crowd, so I only stayed there like 20 minutes, then left. I wanted to get Churros from Churros Rellenos, but I didn't wanna wait in line.I think it's $3 each. And I think so many people were waiting in line for this. Yeah, it smelled good. After Olvera street, I decided to walk to… -

30 Apr 2012 | 2:56 amIce Kiss has been on my list to go for their shaved ice. So yeah, of course I got my shaved ice. 28 Apr 2012 | 2:01 amI was excited when I came here with my friend. But I was REALLY disappointed when I got home because the cashier guy gave me my friend's order. So I got all the pastries that I didn't want. This was almost a year ago, but I'm still pissed off. I guess this could happen if he was just keep chatting and not really paying attention. I had 3 egg tarts, choco covered strawberry and cream puff. I think the total was around $10.All the pastries were average. Not much to talk about. My fried ate the pastries I bought, she told me they weren't delicious. But I'm willing to go back and try the pastries…

Progressives begin mail campaign against Democratic state senator, label him out-of-touch millionaire
15 May 2012 | 1:13 pmA coalition of progressive groups have mailed the first of what they hope will be nine pieces against state Sen. John Lee, calling him "a millionaire who stands with the richest 1%, not the bottom 99%." The targeted mailer, posted at right, uses several Lee votes, including against a tenant rights bill co-sponsored by Speaker Barbara Buckley, to contrast him with their candidate, Patricia Spearman. The folks out to erase Lee are: ProgressNow Nevada Action, Nevada Conservation League, Planned Parenthood and IBEW. Also, MoveOn, PLAN Action and Sierra Club are assisting where they can. Other… -
Clark County loses arbitration case with firefighter canned in sick leave scandal
15 May 2012 | 12:14 pmClark County did not prove that a firefighter the government terminated at the height of the sick abuse scandal abused his privileges, an arbitrator has ruled, potentially costing the folks on Grand Central Parkway a lot of money. Donald Munn's lawyer says the award could even up worth seven figures considering that the fired firefighter wants his job back with all benefits, too. Although the arbitrator said an email sent by Munn raised suspicions about the use of sick leave in the department, the county had no cause to fire him and did not meet the burden of proof. We had Munn and his… -

Man, I feel like a woman
11 May 2012 | 8:34 pmHuffPost Women has a new campaign called “The Moment I Knew I Was a Woman, Not a Girl” in which users submit videos chronicling their exile from Girlville. It’s an interesting question, especially considering how dangerous it feels to be Living While Female these days. And it strikes to the core of gender, really. Because it begs the question: If puberty and sex organs are not what make you a woman (and I would argue that they are not), then what does? What act, what experience, what emotional moment is it that turns a person into a woman? In her book, Bossypants, Tina Fey… -
Hunger is no game
11 May 2012 | 3:47 amIn honor of The Sin City Siren’s 5th birthday, I have been campaigning for the readers’ charity of choice: *God’s Groceries. The week’s nearly come to an end, and I hope that I have motivated you to donate or do some other service toward helping the needy in our community. As I shared earlier this week, hunger and poverty are issues that are deeply personal to me. But when we look at the numbers, it’s clear to see that I’m not the only one who has a personal connection to going hungry in America. Here are some sobering stats on the hungry and “food… -
Obama comes out of the closet on same-sex marriage
9 May 2012 | 9:51 pmAs if we weren’t already looking down the barrel of a barn-burner of a presidential campaign season, President Barrack Obama just raised the stakes today by becoming the first sitting US president to come out in favor of same-sex marriage rights. (Kinda makes Vice President Joe Biden’s pro-equality comments last week — however hackneyed by Will & Grace references — seem like a test-drive, huh?) And as this comes on the heels of the North Carolina vote (only 20 states offer any form of legal protection to LGBT couples), naturally it’s got GOP blowhards…

Las Vegas homes have appreciated more than 10% in 2012
23 Apr 2012 | 4:42 pmLas Vegas bank owned (foreclosure) homes inventory is=714, short sales homes=1567 and non-distressed homes=2507 In the last blog I wrote that despite “Las Vegas real estate experts” prediction of more than a 10% price drop in 2012, I said the prices will increase more than 10% in 2012, it already did and is on the way to 20% appreciation. Why? We still have the same number of underwater homes in Las Vegas and although unemployment has come down to 12% this is not enough to justify such price increases. These are the factors which these experts have based their prediction on and below… -
Las Vegas real estate market 2012 Part 3
26 Mar 2012 | 1:41 amIn the last two blog posts Las Vegas real estate market 2012 Part 1 Las Vegas real estate market 2012 Part 2 I have explained what Las Vegas real estate analysts base their analysis and predictions on and why they are wrong. The proof is in the current Las Vegas real estate market. As I wrote, we currently have less than 1390 foreclosures that are listed in the Las Vegas MLS that are not under contract and new listings go under contract awfully quickly. Below is other controlling factors which are not fully discussed by other Las Vegas real estate analysts: 1: Las Vegas residential real… -

Las Vegas real estate market 2012 Part 1
14 Feb 2012 | 1:48 pmHow Las Vegas real estate analysts arrive at their predictions of the future of Las Vegas real estate and why the factors that they fail to account for skews their analysis and predictions. Before I get into the statistics of Las Vegas residential real estate in 2012, I am going to discuss a few important factors that don’t necessarily show up in these numbers or news articles. However let’s discuss the factors that these analysts account for. Most Las Vegas real estate analysts try to predict how many Las Vegas homes, condos or townhomes are or will be under water (owe more than the… -
How to insure failure in selling Las Vegas luxury homes
6 Jul 2011 | 7:08 pmIf you want to make sure a million dollar Las Vegas luxury home listing doesn’t sell, do these: Do you know what a rare commodity in Las Vegas real estate is these days? I’ll tell you, it is cash buyer for a million dollar plus Las Vegas luxury homes and we had one a couple of weeks ago. They are relocating from the South and visited Las Vegas over the weekend to see homes. We currently have 329 homes in the Las Vegas MLS with an asking price of more than one million dollars. Of the 329 only 14 are bank owned or REPO homes, 19 are short sales and the rest are non-distressed sales. Only…

Past -- and present
10 May 2012 | 2:10 amIn 1933 a group of American Legion and financial community figures allegedly approached former Marine general and Medal of Honor recipient Smedley Butler to lead a coup d'etat against the United States government, and establish a military regime. Butler reported the contact and there ensued a congressional investigation into what became known as "the business plot," which was seemingly intended to set up fascist rule. Boulder City native Sally Denton has written a book, The Plots Against the President, that deals with the plot. We talked to her about the scheme -- and its echoes today.

So Tao handed out yarmulkes when the world’s Canadianiest rapper was at the club Friday night for his concert afterparty. It really reaffirms what you probably already knew: There is absolutely no way to look cool in a yarmulke. Drake jumped on mic to do a medley of songs and a full length version of “The Motto” sans Lil Wayne. J. Cole and Marley Marl were with him, holding down the table in their yarmulkes, in case, we… -
WYNN’S NYC APARTMENT HUNT OVER

Which is good, because he was considering buying Staten Island just so he wouldn’t have to pay so much in bridge-and-tunnel tolls. Wynn landed a $70 million duplex penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton — what used to be the hotel’s grand ballroom. It’s more than 10,000 square feet and will incur $18,057 in monthly communal charges and $11,593 in taxes. It’s kind of a bargain, though. He haggled down from the asking price of…

Amazing Rare Las Vegas Photo Gallery…
15 May 2012 | 4:38 pm(May 15, 2012) Every once in a while, we stumble across these amazing images that show Las Vegas from yesteryear. Way back when we were just a little gambling town in the desert in Nevada! Here’s the description from the new un-earthed (via Life: Classic Las Vegas): Of all the major destination towns in the U.S., Las Vegas might be the most perfectly, unashamedly transparent. No other city in North America, after all — and perhaps no other city in the world — has for so long been so identified with one pursuit: namely, the heart-pounding, more-often-than-not-futile hunt for the… -
