    juliab
Greetings, fellow British folk. So yesterday we prepared you for the shock of your first time in Vegas, and told you how to feast on the American side of Sin City. We know you’ll love it here. But we also understand that Vegas is like orange squash - a big bottle of America concentrate. And, during your stay, you may well feel like some dilution before you can drink it again. So here’s where to go for a little taste of the green green grass of home. Or, rather a taste of the UK, as Vegas imagines the UK to be. Let’s go all Vera Lynn.

But over at The Palazzo, there's something that we find highly practical inside the hotel's three and four-bedroom Chairman's Suites. It’s a surprise to many Las Vegas tourists that a large number of Las Vegas locals hate hanging out on The Strip.  We, of course, do not belong to that category of Las Vegans.  We like visiting the coolest street in the USA. . .but understand why many locals don’t share our enthusiasm. With the unemployment rate in Las Vegas at 13.4%, I’m sure there are a lot of folks who would appreciate this offer. It’s not even the end of Daylight Savings, people! True, my favorite holiday is Halloween. So I felt a little slighted when I walked into my neighborhood grocery store on my birthday (Oct. 2) and saw a HUGE Christmas display, front-and-center. But being used to the short-shrift people give Halloween, I…

  • Affordable Luxury: Southern Terrace

Jacqulyn Richey - Las Vegas Real Estate (Realty One Group)
    26 Jul 2009 | 10:50 pm
When surfing through the internet about Las Vegas homes, you'll find a lot of sites that talk about Summerlin, Spanish Trail, Silverado Ranch, etc. They are great communities with a lot to offer a home buyer. However, there are a lot of other wonderful communities that have been largely ignored. One of these is Southern Terrace. The community was built by then Nevada home builder Perma-bilt (who was later acquired by housing giant Meritage Homes shortly after the community was built). It was probably the last master planned community built under the Perma-bilt brand and offers a lot of the…
  • Thinking about CityCenter? You Might Want to Think Again

Jacqulyn Richey - Las Vegas Real Estate (Realty One Group)
    16 Jul 2009 | 2:54 pm
The massive CityCenter project is finally nearing completion. For quite a while, the project was on the fence. Earlier this year, the project suffered a near fatal blow. It started with a construction defect prevented the construction of the Harmon condos, forcing MGM Mirage to refund buyer's deposits on those units already sold. Then in April, their partner in the project, Dubai World, refused to honor their financial commitment to provide funding of the project. Despite their differences, MGM Mirage and Dubai World managed to resolve their conflict and came to agreement. Funding and…

For those of you familiar with Digg, Puurple looks very similar. The site allows you to post your favorite real estate stories and vote on them, just like Digg. Submitting your blog posts to Puurple will also help draw in more traffic to your site. In all fairness, I must disclose that my husband Charles is a moderator on the site (aka spam killer). Posts not related to the real estate industry (mortgage, etc) will be removed. You will need to sign up for an account (it's free) in order to be able to submit and vote on stories.
  • Live like a High Roller - Without the High Roller Prices

Jacqulyn Richey - Las Vegas Real Estate (Realty One Group)
    19 Jun 2009 | 2:00 pm
By now almost everyone has heard how inexpensive property is in Las Vegas. The national media has beating the foreclosure drum to death. However, certain parts of town still command a hefty price tag. For those looking for a condo on the strip, prices have gone down...but are not at rock bottom. That doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a high roller lifestyle on a more modest budget. There are quite a few communities located within walking distance to the strip that have fallen in price dramatically. They offer some of the same amenities found in strip properties, but cost far less. A good…

  • The New Face of The Great Recession in Las Vegas

    Mike
    15 Oct 2009 | 12:05 pm
Where just a few short years ago this city was America’s darling, Las Vegas has quickly turned into the media’s punching bag.  A global recession that made one bubble burst make another bubble burst that made another bubble burst, Las Vegas has fallen on some hard times.  An unemployment rate of over 13%, a sea of foreclosed residential and commercial properties, new construction halted with rusting steel suspended in the air and budget crises at every turn, Las Vegas has taken the full brunt of The Great Recession head on.  Out of all these apocalyptic pictures of the 2009…
  • Five Random Recommendations - Sept. 09 Edition

    Mike
    23 Sep 2009 | 3:17 pm
My opinion is obviously regarded as gold to so many, so I would like to start a new monthly (maybe) series of Five Random Recommendations.  Some of these will be local to the Las Vegas area, and others will be for all the world to experience.  Everything from food to television shows and places to hang to websites are eligible.  I currently do not receive any compensation for my recommendations, but I am always open to get a paycheck, so if you would like me to whore out your product, by all means pay me and I’ll be more than happy to flush my ethics down the toilet! And with that…
  • The Best Thing I Ate In The Last Two Weeks (09/07/09-09/20/09): The Las Vegas Greek Food Festival

    Mike
    21 Sep 2009 | 2:26 pm
Yeah yeah yeah….so my weekly series isn’t quite weekly.  But boy am I happy I waited for this one, because I haven’t been as impressed with something like this in a long time.  The best thing I ate in the last two weeks was the Las Vegas Greek Food Festival.  Yes, I ate the entire festival. The Las Vegas Greek Food Festival was held on the beautiful and spacious grounds of the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. And before anyone gets worried, I’m glad to report that the beautiful church is still standing, even with the fire and brimstone that goes along…
  • Notice of Default - Short Sales in Las Vegas - A Realtor Explains

Written by Coldwell Banker Ward…, Broker in Las Vegas September 14, 2009 2:34 PM Home Selling in Las Vegas No comments 1 view NOD – THE NOTICE OF DEFAULT – Clark County Nevada Definition: Lenders file in the public records where the property is located a public notice called the Notice of Default. In Nevada, the Notice of Default is not attached to the home physically (like a scarlet letter) as it is in other states. Here it is served to the borrower and posted in the public county records (see link below) Lenders typically do not file a Notice of Default until the borrower…

  • Wanted: downtown landlords who 'get it'

    5 Nov 2009 | 12:12 am
You can't blame Gina Quaranto for beaming with a little pride as she shows off her new gallery, Place, on Main Street just north of Charleston Boulevard. After all, she helped strip out the carpet, repair and stain the concrete floor and paint the walls -- not to mention corral the artists and organize October's inaugural show. It took a lot of proverbial blood, sweat and tears.
  • Gov. Jim Gibbons recalls the car-bomby days of yore, but "makes a mistake."

    5 Nov 2009 | 12:12 am
Monday, Nov. 2 Gibbons appeared on a right-wing radio show in Las Vegas late last month, casting doubt on the well-established 1981 attempt to wire Harry Reid's car to explode. (At the time, now-U.S. Sen. Reid had just finished up a mob-fighting tenure as chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.) Gibbons said on the show that he'd heard the so-called bomb was really a telephone book in a shoe box.
  • (Re)used books

    5 Nov 2009 | 12:12 am
If you cherish the Gutenbergian development of the printed word, an art exhibit devoted to the thoughtful mutilation of books might be tough to stomach, even an exhibit as diverse and challenging as Altered States: Artists Re-imagine the Book, at Reed Whipple Cultural Center (821 Las Vegas Blvd. North, 229-1012) through Jan. 2.

    Jason Scavone
    6 Nov 2009 | 4:56 pm
At least getting skewered by South Park isn’t as embarrassing as having a creepy mannequin that looks like you. The excitement in the air is palpable: Someone in Las Vegas is getting urinated on tonight. Well. One more person, we mean. R. Kelly is at Planet Hollywood Resort tonight with an afterparty set for Hawaiian Tropic Zone. That sound you hear is his stream-of-consciousness narrative to a stripped-down beat as he rides in his limo toward the theater. “Now I’m stuck in traffic/Sittin’ next to MAN-DA-LAY/And the light turns green/But The Deuce is IN THE WAY.”…

    6 Nov 2009 | 3:38 pm
The rich look to get richer. Here we go. Someone’s winning $8 million and someone’s … settling for $1.2 million. We suppose that’s not a bad way to take a little of the pressure off. We’re not sure what’s more interesting, that the World Series of Poker’s November Nine have already collected $1.26 million at the end of the Main Event break, or that of the remaining $15.84 million, it’s only made $1,321 in interest since July 16. This totally crushes our fantasies of scoring millions in a jewel heist and living off the interest from our Cayman…
  • DANCER TAKES IN JERSEY SONGS

    Jason Scavone
    6 Nov 2009 | 1:42 pm
You can see the kidnapping wheels spinning. Dancing with the Stars’ Kym Johnson gave the gift of Jersey Boys to her mother for her birthday last night. Well, we mean, not literally. She did not put a bow on Deven May for her mother’s amusement or anything like that. That would probably be kidnapping, and Johnson has a high-profile gig to worry about. Regardless, the two of them went backstage after the show to meet the cast. Which is exactly the kind of cover you’d want if you were going to, say, kidnap a performer from the musical theater solely for the amusement of your…
  • ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER AWARD

    Jason Scavone
    6 Nov 2009 | 12:51 pm
Soon, the tables will be made out of old awards. It’s getting old hat for Joel Robuchon, but for the fourth straight year, the MGM Grand restaurant captured the AAA Five Diamond Award. Skylofts at MGM also notched its fourth straight Five Diamond, but they’re practically whippersnappers compared to Le Cirque, which took its seventh and both Julian Serrano’s Picasso and Bellagio, which racked up their ninth straight awards. That’s a lot of awards. That’s more awards than a crappy Little League team gets handed at the end of the year just for managing to not set the…

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday that is about celebrating and colourfully honouring departed loved ones. Falling in November, Dia de los Muertos is soon upon us.Las Vegas is doing its own spin on the day, with several Dia de los Muertos-inspired activities:1) Luxor's Tacos & Tequila, Sunday, 1 November 2009, 12pm-5pm. Partake in a Deadliest Dressed competition and feast on a special brunch and holiday-appropriate drinks. Mechad Brooks from True Blood is hosting this party.2) Springs Preserve, Sunday, 1 November 2009, 3pm-9pm. With general admission to the Springs…
  • District Halloween Decor

    22 Oct 2009 | 8:26 pm
Halloween is in the air... at least at The District in Henderson (the twin city of Las Vegas!) The hip little shopping mecca, adjacent to Green Valley Ranch, is getting into the mood with ghosts floating about between the palm trees (do you see them?!?!).... Plus, an enormous (and friendly) ghost and his companion jack'o'lantern hanging out in the main plaza... I don't think I've ever seen a ghost stick out his tongue... have you? And finally, reems and reems of spiderwebs have somehow encased the shrubs all over the District. It was a nice surprise walking along the promenade with all this…
  • Palazzo Fall Decor

    18 Oct 2009 | 11:38 am
My last post was about the atrium at the Bellagio being all decked out for the changing seasons. So I thought it would be nice to continue the theme with some Fall images from the Bellagio. Fall in Las Vegas always seems to short (does anyone else feel that the transition from Summer to Winter happens in an instance?), so I just can't get enough of the cozy displays around town. Fall decor at the Palazzo, cascading from the ceiling. This is definitely not a seasonal display, but I love the shimmer of the tiles juxtaposed against the shimmer of the coins. Unexpectedly lovely! What do you think?
  • Fall at the Bellagio

    11 Oct 2009 | 9:09 pm
As per the request of Theresa C, here are some shots from the Bellagio's Fall Theme at the Conservatory/Atrium. Unfortunately, they are a bit blurry, so I hope you can feel the festive vibe despite the poor quality. I wish I could have spent more time enjoying the beautiful Fall weather here in Las Vegas this weekend, but domestic drama defined my Friday through Sunday! The water heater burst a leak and flooded the garage and part of the house! So it was lots of work and no play for me this weekend. C'est la vie, right?!?Hope everyone else's weekends were much lovelier : ).Photos by Jules @…
