The Mandalay Bay Hotel room rates in Vegas are hard to beat right now. If you can’t find a place to stay for under a Ben Franklin, we hate to say it, but you aren’t looking very hard. In the spirit of the season (or is it savings?), many Vegas hotels are putting themselves on a pre-holiday sale, dropping prices even lower in an attempt to lure end-of-the-year visitors. Thanks to the tweets of Two Way Hard Three's Hunter, we were tipped off that Taste of Wynn inside Encore has closed. How could this be? Well, the official word is that the shop closed to make room for an entertainment store that will feature merchandise from Le Rêve, the property's nightclubs and the forthcoming Garth Brooks concerts. “Scott, are you planning a listener meetup any time soon?  We’re going to be in Las Vegas next week, and would love to meet other listeners to your show!” From time to time, I get an email like the one above.  Melissa and I think it’s great that listeners to the show are interested in getting together, like we’ve done in previous meetups.  And while there’s nothing like seeing folks in person, there’s still many more people who’d like to attend but are unable to because their either busy, out of town, or not Las Vegas locals. It’s a surprise to many Las Vegas tourists that a large number of Las Vegas locals hate hanging out on The Strip.  We, of course, do not belong to that category of Las Vegans.  We like visiting the coolest street in the USA. . .but understand why many locals don’t share our enthusiasm. In this edition of the Living in Las Vegas Podcast, we talk about our last couple of visits to The Strip and introduce a new “cast member” to the Living in Las Vegas Podcast!  Show notes: PHOTOS! Here, she breaks down the latest Richard Ziser garbage and helps demystify the legalese behind it all. What’s the big deal about “personhood”? On its surface, the “Personhood Initiative” recently introduced by Richard Ziser of defense-of-marriage fame does little to nothing.  It proposes an amendment to the Nevada constitution very succinctly stating: In the great state of Nevada, the term ‘person’ applies to every human being. By now almost everyone has heard how inexpensive property is in Las Vegas. The national media has beating the foreclosure drum to death. However, certain parts of town still command a hefty price tag. For those looking for a condo on the strip, prices have gone down...but are not at rock bottom. That doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a high roller lifestyle on a more modest budget. There are quite a few communities located within walking distance to the strip that have fallen in price dramatically. Villa Trieste is a Summerlin Neighborhood that I wrote about in January.  It is a beautiful community and the homes are wonderful.  The below quote is from an article written in Earth News. Pulte Homes has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Award for Homes Outstanding Production Builder by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). “The USGBC’s Residential Market Development Team selected Pulte for this year’s Production Builder award because of Pulte’s Las Vegas division’s outstanding achievements and future commitments…

Nevada has the highest percentage of teenage pregnancies compared to any other state in the country. The non-profit agencies that counsel teenagers say the lack of education and the economy are to blame for the increase. A national study shows that 113 teens for every 1,000 in the state are pregnant.

There is little discernible difference between Atreyu and the kids hanging out behind your 7-11. Atreyu, which made the extra-metal move of naming their metal band after a character from The Neverending Story joins up with Hollywood Undead and Escape the Fate tonight at House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay. Seriously, at least give them this: That name doesn’t sound like they care whether you think they rock hard or not. Cannibal Corpse? They totally have something to prove. Atreyu? Nothing to prove at all. Their afterparty is set for Wasted Space at the Hard Rock Hotel. Jay Sean and Kaci…

FACT: The hurricane glass is the official party glass. The one immutable truth of Thanksgiving is that once you’ve had your fill of potatoes and you’re on hour five of hearing your third cousin tell his story about seeing President Reagan in the Rose Garden on his Fourth Grade tour of D.C. for what seems like the 26th straight year, you need a stiff belt. Stiff? Check. B.B. King’s Blues Club at The Mirage has it covered with the Boll Weevil. Everything we know about the boll weevil comes from Elvis, which basically means they’re about as attractive as a girl…

There really should be a law requiring anyone who beatboxes in public to wear parachute pants. (Photos by Al Powers) Blake Lewis, Season 6’s runner-up on American Idol was at Tao inside The Venetian last night to celebrate the release of his Heartbreak on Vinyl. He jumped up on stage around 1 a.m. to do a little beatboxing and freestyling before launching into “Binary Love.” (We just hope Kraftwerk is getting royalties.) Porn star Stormy Daniels was in the crowd, drinking Champagne with a large group. Allison Janney was there for dinner, as part of her ongoing 50th birthday…

(Photo by Gemi Larson) The West Wing’s Allison Janney continued her 50th birthday celebration with Wicked’s Megan Hilty and two other friends last night at the 7 p.m. show of Love at The Mirage where they tipped back a little Veuve Clicquot. West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin has a new show coming out about being behind the scenes of a TV show, which is just like every other show he’s ever done. He does like to reuse a lot of the same actors, though, so Janney has a good shot at a new part. Still,…

Home this weekend doing major Fall cleaning (somehow I missed the Spring cleaning thing), I'm dreaming of a roadtrip. My lovely sister-in-law brought to my attention a cool, organic cafe in LA called Urth Caffe... in addition to a cozy atmosphere it offers only ethical and organic coffees and teas... awesome, right? It's definitely on my wishlist of things to do the next time I'm in the City of Angels. Has anyone visited Urth Caffe? Or do you have another favourite coffee/tea shop? Please do share!LA Eats: Broaster Kitchen

Halloween is in the air... at least at The District in Henderson (the twin city of Las Vegas!) The hip little shopping mecca, adjacent to Green Valley Ranch, is getting into the mood with ghosts floating about between the palm trees (do you see them?!?!).... Plus, an enormous (and friendly) ghost and his companion jack'o'lantern hanging out in the main plaza... I don't think I've ever seen a ghost stick out his tongue... have you? And finally, reems and reems of spiderwebs have somehow encased the shrubs all over the District. It was a nice surprise walking along the promenade with all this…
  • Palazzo Fall Decor

    18 Oct 2009 | 11:38 am
My last post was about the atrium at the Bellagio being all decked out for the changing seasons. So I thought it would be nice to continue the theme with some Fall images from the Bellagio. Fall in Las Vegas always seems to short (does anyone else feel that the transition from Summer to Winter happens in an instance?), so I just can't get enough of the cozy displays around town. Fall decor at the Palazzo, cascading from the ceiling. This is definitely not a seasonal display, but I love the shimmer of the tiles juxtaposed against the shimmer of the coins. Unexpectedly lovely! What do you think?
